Just turn around.
In his book, The Untethered Soul, Michael Singer said, “Do not let anything that happens in life be important enough that you’re willing to close your heart over it.”
What a powerful statement! But, we do, don’t we? Things happen. Life happens. And, slowly, incrementally, over time, our hearts start to close. We get protective and fearful. We begin to (air quote) protect (air quote) ourselves from things we actually want. Being recently divorced after a 20-year marriage, I found myself wanting to close my heart. But then, I experienced something that helped me see that I really wasn't "protecting" myself.
I felt his energy before I saw him. I was so moved, I shared with my girlfriend about this man I just experienced. I let it go and started dancing with the girls. A few minutes later, my friends noticed the man I had just described to them. There he was. Standing behind me. Noticing my energy, too. Waiting for me to turn around.
I heard my friends say to me. “Luly, he’s standing right behind you…Turn around.”
The thought of turning around felt like skydiving without a parachute. It felt impossible and terrifying.
Thankfully, I have great friends. One looked me in the eyes and said, “you have two songs before I make this embarrassing for you.”
During those few minutes, I remembered Singer’s quote “Do not let anything that happens in life be important enough that you’re willing to close your heart over it.”
All I had to do was turn around. Turn around and open my heart.
Fifteen months later, I continue to keep my heart opened and release the desire to "protect" it.
Whether in business, in relationships with others or our relationship with ourselves, isn’t opening the heart always a better choice than closing it?
