3 Tips to Saying No to the Things You Really Don’t Wanna Do
We all do it. We force a half-smile and say “Sure, yes” when we really want to spit out a firm “No.” It stems from a million places: our heavy superhero cape, urging us to take on the world and solve every problem single-handedly. Or from our guilt, the constant nagging that tells you saying “yes” means you’re doing a better job of balancing.
But so many times, whatever the reason, saying “yes” when you really mean “no!” gets in the way of the things that are truly important to us, the things we really want to get done. So, without further ado, here are three tips to saying “no” to the things you really just don’t want to do.
1. Think about all the things you’d rather be doing
Bring to mind everything you’d be passing up on the moment “yes” escapes your lips. A movie with the kids, romantic dinner with your husband, or maybe enjoying one hour of complete silence in your home. Still inclined to say yes? Didn’t think so.
2. Offer an alternative
Find another way to contribute without doing the actual act being asked of you. If you’re willing to meet half way, the other person should be, too.
3. “I’m sorry, I can’t.”
Even if you’re saying “no” because you were really looking forward to getting a haircut that day, be honest with the person. “I’d love to do this, but I’m sorry, I can’t” is a perfectly fine statement, without necessarily sharing that your split ends need to go, like, now.
