Busted: When Authenticity Escapes Us

busted.jpg

Okay, so I have a confession to make. I tried really hard to be cool, and it didn't work. It didn't work because I wasn't myself. It's a silly example, but it helped me remember who I really am.....and gave me a nice reminder of the power of authenticity.

I was at the nail salon getting a mani/pedi. I had selected my usual pink polish (this week was peach daiquiri) when along comes an adorable teenager with this super modern indigo polish. She was chatting up a storm with her friend and we made some conversation. I complimented her on her polish and she handed it to me, "Try it, go for it," she said. I hesitated, but gave in.

Within seconds of seeing the polish on my nails, I was horrified. This was so not me. Should I leave it on? Heck, let's go for it. While I was proud of myself for trying something new, I was disappointed that I denied myself of my authenticity. I am definitely a watermelontangerinereally red kinda girl.

Have you ever caught yourself in this situation? Sometimes, small instances like this one help keep us in check...
