My A-HA moment about Fear: On a Rock, in a Hummer

This summer, I took a fabulous road trip with my husband, kids, and parents (a 27 year-old dream!). We traveled through 8 states, visited over a dozen national and state parks, and did so many awesome activities. But one of them stopped me in my tracks...literally.

We took a Hummer ride in Moab, Utah – essentially a giant rock – up an extremely steep path. Panicked and terrified, my fear of heights the best of me. My eyes were tightly shut, my palms were sweaty, my heart was racing. I was looking down, praying it would be over soon.

We had just started this 90-minute ride, and I couldn’t imagine how I was going to get through the next 90 seconds.

But then I realized that I had a choice. I could spend the next 90 minutes freaking out, or I could take a deep breath and realize that I was missing out on beautiful scenery as a result of my fear.

I had a choice.

Sometimes we have to look our fears in the face and tell them we’re not too afraid to let go and enjoy ourselves. I opened my eyes, relaxed, and finished the ride with a huge smile on my face, not only because I had fun, but also because I conquered my fear with no turning back.

In life and in business we are sometimes paralyzed by fear. What we want to do is close our eyes because our hearts are racing and our palms are sweaty. But in doing so, we’re not enjoying the ride. What’s the point if you’re not going to enjoy it?

If it’s scary, then you know it’s worth it.

People say that the best way to conquer a fear of something is to do whatever you are scared of. Challenge yourself to move past roadblocks and use your fear to catapult you to success. You’re in charge of how you feel, so make it worth your while.

So go for it! Jump in the Hummer and enjoy the ride!
