5 Ways to Stick with your New Year's Resolution
"Eek. That great New Year's resolution is already down the tubes," said one of my clients to me last week. "Are you really giving up that easily?" I asked.
"It's impossible," she replied.
To which I had a VERY quick rebuttal and one of my favorite quotes: “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!” -Audrey Hepburn
This interaction made me realize how much we doubt ourselves and let negative thoughts and feelings overtake us when we are challenged. I gave her 5 things to do immediately to make sure she achieves her new year's resolution.
In fact, every time a new goal is set, this is what I do. I thought I would share with you all, too, in the hopes that you remember that you can DO IT! You ARE POSSIBLE!
Write it down. Writing it down gives you a sense of confirmation of your goal. Something magical happens when you just write it down.
Imagine it. Picture yourself achieving the goal - whether it's being 10 pounds lighter or making $10,000 more. What does that look like? How does it make you feel? How is your life different? How are you a better person as a result?
Tell someone. Share your goal with someone. This will help you be more accountable, but more importantly, this person can cheer you along the way, pick you up when you are down, and keep you pumped about your goal.
Assign an accountability partner. Find someone who can provide you with some "tough love" and help you achieve your goal. Someone who will consistently check in with you and keep you fighting.
Celebrate. Celebrate along the way. Once you've achieved important milestones, celebrate. Once you've reached your goal, it is important to treat yourself and revel in your successful achievement.
These simple 5 steps have helped me create my goals, but more importantly, achieve them.
What do you do to help you stick with your goals? Are you sticking with your New Year's resolution?
Let me know about them. I want to cheer you on!
